Dr. Laura M. Arpan is the Theodore Clevenger Professor of Communication and Director of Doctoral Studies in the School of Communication at Florida State University. Dr. Arpan’s research examines risk perceptions, human motivation and responses to pro-environmental messages, interventions, and related technologies. Her projects focus on the effectiveness of promotional messages and outreach efforts designed to encourage sustainable behaviors such as energy conservation and efficiency. Recent work has examined Americans’ attitudes toward energy conservation and sustainability, factors enhancing the effectiveness of information campaign messages promoting energy-use-reduction and sustainability

Evangelos Pournaras, Ph.D.
I am an Associate Professor at Distributed Systems and Services group, School of Computing, University of Leeds, UK. I have more than 5 years experience as senior scientist and postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich in Switzerland after having completed my PhD studies in 2013 at Delft University of Technology and VU University Amsterdam in the Netherlands. I have also been a visiting researcher at EPFL in Switzerland. I have industry experience at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in the USA and more recently in the blockchain industry as a research fellow. Since 2007, I hold a MSc with distinction in Internet Computing from University of Surrey, UK and since 2006 a BSc in Technology Education and Digital Systems from University of Piraeus, Greece.

I have won the Augmented Democracy Prize, the 1st prize at ETH Policy Challenge as well as 4 paper awards and honors. I have published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers in high impact journals and conferences and I am the founder of the EPOS, DIAS, SFINA and Smart Agora projects featured at decentralized-systems.org. I have raised significant funding and have been actively involved in EU projects such as ASSET, SoBigData and FuturICT 2.0. I have supervised several PhD and MSc thesis projects, while I have designed courses in the area of data science and multi-agent systems that adopt a novel pedagogical and learning approach. My research interest focus on distributed and intelligent social computing systems with expertise in the inter-disciplinary application domains of Smart Cities and Smart Grids.

Interesting Facts

I photograph a wide range of subjects, yet, I am keen on photographing spontaneous moments, moments which are unexpected and I usually experience in unknown spaces for me. Travel and street photography are fields full of flourishing opportunities for such shots. I use the Fujifilm X100S and the Olympus E-620 digital camera for this type of photography due to their small and light body, flexible control and high quality.
